Price and Halak

Postby Jay Uller on Thu Apr 01, 2010 1:27 pm

Well the debate rages on gsbb but I want to bring it here, there seems to be more open talk here and more fan boy talk here so I want to open the floor,

should the canadiens try to sign both halak and price during the off season, or will it be better for the team to move one, if so who?

I watched the game last night, where price was in net. The two goals he let in, he really couldn't do anything on. It seems that the canadiens do not score as much when price is in net, because he has played well all year, you cannot say he hasn't. It's just the team in front of him have not played well.

Halak has been playing well all year as well, and was great in the olympics. Montreal plays better in front of him so I guess it could be a confidence thing with the team.

I don't think keeping the two of them is the option you want, although if one faltered then you can put the other one in. Personally, Price needs some new scenery because no matter what he does in Montreal, the fans boo him. in that game yesterday, he was the reason that the canadiens even had a chance to tie late (even though they didn't) and was the games third star.

And since both these goalies stock has risen in the last few years, i don't think it is financially doable to sign both of the goalies. The team needs to make up their mind, take a chance and go with a goalie.

So, basically what I am saying is sign Halak and let price move on, hopefully to a place where he might be appreciated.

I would sign Halak now, but the smart thing to do is give the playoffs to Halak. The Habs have seen Price for two post seasons now and I don't think he impressed anyone, so if Halak can carry the ball sign him and let Price go...or sign him for a low price if he wants to stay.

I am not sure Price wants to be resigned after seeing last nights post-game interview. He could beat any team in the league and the fans wouldn't give him an ounce of credit.
Sign Halak and get a good deal in exchange for Price.

Very true posts, I predicted last season before the playoff shananigans that price wouldn't resign in Montreal, as said it is a wise move to see post season Halak. But I think prices return would have been infinetly higher if they had of moved him during the trade dead line instead of after the season. (and to add the knuckle head habs fans boo'ed Price when he was announced the third star) he is top end talent that those fans don't deserve.

I think he would have a higher stock if he would have been traded but I think the canadiens were worried about whether halak would falter or not.

It's a pretty tough position for the habs, as they have two young, able goaltenders who are largely unproven in the playoffs.

Flip a coin?

Halak has earned the #1 spot and should be given the net during the playoffs. I think the best thing for Price would be to get out of Montreal as quickly as possible and by any means necessary. It seems no matter what he does the Montreal fans hate him and blame him every time he loses even though in his last 6 losses, the Habs have scored only 8 goals. I don't think he'll ever reach his full potential playing in Montreal

Ideally, they would like to keep both goaltenders. However, due to the salary cap that is probably a difficult thing to do, as both will demand significant raises from over this seasons salary. With that being said, someone will have to go, and it appears that someone will be Carey Price. He has put up good statistics this year outside of his win-loss record is not good, and fans find this un-acceptable. Halak is still young and has played wonderfully this year, taking over the number one job and showing just as much potential as Price had in the past. Price has had too much pressure on him in Montreal where they deemed him the next coming of Roy, Dryden, Plante, etc. before he even had a chance to show he could accomplish that lofty level of play. He may need to play in a city where the pressure isn't so great (ie. Atlanta, Florida, Tampa). Either way, this is a lose-lose for the general manager of the Canadians.

Halak and Price are both starting goalies(or have the potential to be). so Keeping both is not an option. I think they question is who is going to get you a better return in a trade. I believe that Price will get a better return just because he is younger and his is physically bigger (6'3") as oppossed to Halak(5'11"). I think both Goalies will emerge as number ones wherever they play. I think Price needs to live/play somewhere other than Montreal where no one will recognize him walking the streets and not having the Pressure of Playing in Montreal. I think if Price gets out and is allowed to develop to his full potential he could be Canada's starter in the next olympics(if the NHL allows).
